President Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi, on Wednesday, September 24, conceded defeat in the ongoing presidential election in the Southern African country. Chakwera's acceptance came hours before the official results of the election were due to be announced.

In the poll, the official results so far indicated that the former President Peter Mutharika, who was Chakwera's predecessor, has been commanding the lead in the September presidential election.

According to Reuters, he added that he was committed to a transparent electoral process in the country. The country's electoral commission is due to release the September presidential election results on Wednesday, September 24.

The supporters of the former president celebrate at the national results centre following the nationwide broadcast of President Chakwera. The September election was the fourth showdown between 70-year-old President Chakwera and Mutharika, 85.

Mutharika emerged victorious in the 2014 and 2019 elections. His 2019 election was nullified by the constitutional court as a result of irregularities, which included the correction of fluid on election result sheets. The rerun of the 2020 election was won by Chakwera.

Jonathan's election compared to Malawi's Chatwera's poll

Chakwera's election can be compared to that of the former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, who conceded defeat in the 2015 presidential election in the West African country to the late President Muhammadu Buhari.

Buhari emerged as the presidential candidate of the newly formed All Progressives Congress (APC), which was a coalition of other regional political parties, including the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

Interestingly, President Jonathan is being tipped to contest against Bola Tinubu, the current Nigerian president, who was instrumental in the defeat of the former president in the 2015 election.

It is not clear if Jonathan would repeat the feat of former President Mutharika of Malawi in Nigeria in the 2027 presidential election. While there are calls on the former Nigerian president to join the 2027 presidential election, he has been keeping mum on his second-term ambition.
