In what medical professionals have described as a “shocking miracle,” a 20-year-old man from Florida survived a point-blank gunshot wound to the chest after a gold cross necklace deflected the bullet, preventing potentially fatal damage.
Aiden Perry had been spending time at a friend’s apartment in Sumter County on 7 June when the incident occurred. According to reports, Perry was accidentally shot with a .40-calibre pistol while his friend was allegedly showing off the weapon.

The bullet entered Perry’s chest, exited near his armpit, and re-entered through his arm, fracturing his humerus.
Speaking to Fox 35 Orlando, Perry recalled the terrifying moment: “I looked down I see tons of blood. I thought I was going to die, honestly.”
Doctors credit necklace for preventing fatal injury
Perry was rushed to HCA Florida Ocala Hospital, where emergency medics immediately took him into surgery. Surgeons were reportedly astonished to find that, despite the bullet’s trajectory through his chest, none of his major organs had been damaged.
Khafra Garcia Henry, one of the surgeons who operated on Perry, explained: “The bullet entered his left upper chest around this area and travelled to his left arm. When we normally see these injuries, they're usually devastating injuries. In Aidan’s case, he was fortunate enough where the bullet did not enter his chest wall – it ricocheted off the chain he was wearing.”
Medical staff believe the gold cross necklace, which Perry had received as a Christmas gift from his father, was positioned precisely where it needed to be to intercept the bullet. The impact reportedly split the necklace in two, altering the bullet’s path and significantly reducing the damage.
Henry added:
“He's extremely lucky. A very fortunate young individual because if his chain was not there, the outcome would have been completely different.”
Faith strengthened after near-death experience
Following the ordeal, Perry said the experience had deepened his faith. “It’s just kind of a reminder now – to never stop believing… keep believing and God’s definitely real,” he told reporters.
In a separate interview with WESH2, Perry held up the shattered remains of the necklace and said:
“I look at it as a lifesaver. I probably wouldn't be talking to you guys right now [without it].”
Perry’s father, who had gifted the necklace, also credited the family’s faith with helping to shield his son from more severe harm.
Shooter charged with culpable negligence
Authorities confirmed that the individual accused of shooting Perry was arrested and charged with culpable negligence causing injury. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
