United pressed hard in the second half but could not find a way through a resolute Hull City defensive unit.

The final whistle confirmed a defeat that carries an unfortunate record for the club — it is the first time in their history that Manchester United have lost a Premier League opening-day fixture to a newly promoted side, as noted by ESPN.

Carrick reacts to Man Utd loss

Manager Michael Carrick, who is now into his first full season in charge at Old Trafford, acknowledged the poor showing in his post-match press conference, saying he was disappointed with how his side performed.

“It is one game. First game of the season. It is disappointing enough. It hurts. Of course it does. But it is one game,” he said via NBC Sports.
“It doesn’t change the whole course of direction the team is going in or the football club. We will stay calm, stay in the bubble and focus on next week.”

Hull City take a significant confidence boost into the rest of the campaign, with their next assignment being an away trip to fellow newly-promoted side Coventry City, who suffered a defeat against Arsenal in their own season opener.
