Super Eagles legend John Mikel Obi is unhappy with the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation.

Nigeria are walking on a tight rope and about to miss the Mundial back-to-back after a disastrous qualifiers.

The Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar after playing a 1-1 draw in their last match against Ghana at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja, with fans going haywire.

Nigeria needed a win against South Africa in their matchday 8 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, but ended playing a 1-1 draw at the Free State Stadium on Tuesday, September 9.

The woes of the West African giants were compounded following the injury of Galatasaray forward Victor Osimhen during their 1-0 win against Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on September 6.

Mikel Obi calls for sack of NFF board

2013 AFCON winner John Mikel Obi has called for the sack of the board of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) if the country fails to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

In a post on Facebook, the UEFA Champions League believes the NFF, led by Ibrahim Gusau should take a bow and do the honourable thing.

The 38-year-old said Nigerians will accept nothing less than qualification, adding that the last two matches will determine the team’s fate. He said:

"If Nigeria doesn’t qualify for the World Cup, the entire NFF board has to go… it’s unacceptable."

Zamfara FA Chairman Ibrahim Gusau was elected President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on September 22, 2022.

According ESPN, Gusau defeated two former NFF vice presidents, Seyi Akinwunmi and Shehu Dikko (currently Chairman of the National Sports Commission), as well as ex-Super Eagles goalkeeper Idah Peterside.

The WAFU B 1st Vice President has been the chairman of Zamfara Football Association since 2011 and also a member of the NFF Executive Committee under the immediate past President Amaju Pinnick.

Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup under the former Delta State FA Chairman, Pinnick, despite being the 1st Vice President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), per Aclsports.

South Africa's sports minister trolls Nigeria

Legit.ng earlier reported that South Africa's sports minister aimed a dig at Nigeria and other countries in Group C after the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier match day eight fixtures.
