Popular African Boxer Bahubali Tragically Dies at 32 After Fight Complications

A Ghanaian boxer, Ernest Akusehy, has passed away at the age of 32 on Tuesday morning, September 23.

Akusehy, popularly known as Bahubali, died tragically just 10 days after taking heavy blows during a bout at Ghana’s Bukom Boxing Arena, the same venue where a Nigerian boxer died six months earlier.

The boxer was pronounced dead around 2am, and sources close to the family suspect the cause may be linked to internal injuries.

He lost his final bout to fast-rising boxer Jacob Dickson in a super middleweight bout, which took place on Saturday night, September 13.

Before the bout, Akuseby promised to school his opponent, but the bout later turned into a one-sided contest as Dickson won in the eighth round via technical knockout (TKO).

In a viral video on X, the late boxer was seen trying to find his rhythm as his opponent took him to the cleaners with coordinated and calculated punches.

Some boxing fans reacted to the passing away of the fans, blaming the authorities for sanctioning the bout.

"This match should have been stopped long ago. No professionalism at all."

"Unfortunately Bahubali is dead barely two weeks after this fight."

@iambibini added:

"This match should have happened. Dickson came in weighing over 200lb and Bahubali with 170lb. Those were responsible for this match should be held accountable. There weight classes in boxing for a reason. This is Illegal."

Ernest Akushey was regarded as one of Ghana's brightest boxing stars in the super middleweight and cruiserweight divisions.

According to 3news, the 32-year-old maintained an unbeaten record in the early stages of his career, cementing his name in the hearts of the fans at the iconic Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra.

Akushey's nickname, Bahubali, came from the legendary warrior in Indian movies due to his determination and relentless spirit in the boxing ring.

The 32-year-old was touted to carry on with the legacy of Ghanaian boxing legends like Azumah Nelson, Joshua Clottey, and Ike Quartey.

Akushey's humble beginning

Ernest Akushey was born in Chorkor, a suburb of Ghana's capital city, Accra.

He rose from the local gym of Chorkor and James Town to the spotlight at the Bukom Boxing Arena.

The 32-year-old had a boxing style that was popular among fans in Mamprobi, Bukom, La, Osu.

Before going independent, he was under former boxer Ayittey Powers' Promotions until his dismissal in 2024, per Ghanaweb.
