“Tobi has once again demonstrated that with patriotic fervour, coupled with hard work and determination, any height is surmountable.”
“Her achievement is a source of national pride,” the statement read.

Tinubu described her performance as a source of pride for millions of Nigerians, saying her relentless drive and spirit serve as an inspiration for young athletes across the country.

Silence on $100k cash reward

While the president celebrated Amusan’s latest podium finish, there was no mention of any financial reward for the hurdler, who is the only Nigerian to have won a medal at the ongoing championship in Japan.

This silence has sparked discussion among Nigerians, especially as Tinubu had previously rewarded the Super Falcons with $100,000 each after their record 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations victory.

The President also gave the same amount to players of the D’Tigress basketball team following their fifth straight AfroBasket title.

Both rewards are now seen as a benchmark for Nigerian sportsmen from the presidency, with athletes jokingly keeping their eyes on the $100k cash prize.

For now, it remains unclear whether Amusan will receive any similar gesture from the presidency for her latest achievement.

Amusan’s track legacy continues

The silver medal at the World Athletics Championships adds to Amusan’s growing collection of honours.

She remains the world record holder in the 100m hurdles with a stunning 12.12 seconds, set at the 2022 championships in Oregon.

Her achievements include gold medals at the African Championships, Commonwealth Games, and multiple Diamond League titles, making her one of Nigeria’s most decorated athletes of all time.

Despite falling just short of gold in Tokyo, Amusan’s consistency at the highest level continues to put Nigerian athletics in the spotlight, and her performance keeps hope alive that she may strike gold again at next year’s Olympic Games.
