FCT, Abuja - The general election holds every four years across the 774 local government areas and 36 states in Nigeria.
This civil responsibility allows Nigerians to elect individuals to lead and represent them in several elective positions, from councilor, local government chairman, state house of assembly, governor, house of representatives, senate, and the office of the president.

However, as important as this exercise this, not every citizen is eligible to participate in an election.

According to Section 77 subsection 2, there are some specific requirements to meet to be able to participate in an election in Nigeria.
Section 77 subsection 2 says:
“Every citizen of Nigeria who has attained the age of eighteen years residing in Nigeria at the time of the registration of voters for purposes of election to a legislative house shall be entitled to be registered as a voter for that election.”
Nigerians who are disqualified from voting
According to Democracy 101 on Channels Television, below are groups of Nigerians who are disqualified from voting.
- Age: Nigerians who are below the age of eighteen years are not allowed to vote in any election.
- Nigerians in Diaspora: Nigerians living outside the country also cannot vote during elections. This is because there is no electronic voting, as voters have to cast their votes at physical polling units.

The Federal Republic of Nigeria is not different, as the country has basic qualifications that those seeking elective office must meet.

What disqualifies someone from running for Office
