- Ajayi and the PDP earlier withdrew his appeal at the Supreme Court, challenging the victory of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and the APC in the election

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the 2024 Ondo election, Agboola Ajayi, is reportedly planning to dump the party for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), if the ground plan does not change.
Ajayi's withdrawal came just after he withdrew his appeal against the outcome of the 2024 governorship election in the state at the Supreme Court, challenging the victory of the APC and Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

The former governorship candidate explained that he withdrew his petition at the Supreme Court after a wide consultation with his family, party members, associates and legal advisers.
According to The Nation, Governor Aiyedatiwa, in his reaction, said that Ajayi has expressed his readiness to return to the APC to support the re-election of President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
The governor's statement reads in part:
“In fact, Hon. Agboola Ajayi has told me personally that he is coming to join the APC. I am waiting for him so that we can work together to build a greater Ondo State.”
Supreme Court dismisses appeal against APC
The Supreme Court had earlier dismissed appeals filed by three political parties challenging the victory of the governor and the APC in the 2024 governorship election in Ondo state.
Ajayi, the PDP candidate and the leading opposition in the election, earlier challenged the governor's victory. He, however, later withdrew his appeal, which consequently informed the Supreme Court judgment.
The Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) also followed Ajayi's step in the suit.
Aiyedatiwa attends Supreme Court hearing
According to a social media post by the Ondo state government, Aiyedatiwa was present in person at the Supreme Court to witness the proceedings of the case and addressed journalists after the suit was dismissed as a result of the withdrawal of the complainants.
Following the ruling of the Supreme Court, the APC national chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, paid a congratulatory visit to the governor at his official residence in Abuja on Wednesday, September 17, shortly after the judgment was delivered.
Also, the APC in the state has welcomed the ruling of the Supreme Court and called on opposition leaders, including Ajayi, to join hands with Aiyedatiwa's government in moving the state forward.
