President Bola Tinubu, during his campaigns in the 2023 presidential election, promised to compete with Russia in supplying gas to Europe, adding that he did not care what the largest country in the world would say.

Within three weeks of assuming office as Nigeria's President, Tinubu has begun moves to actualise his ambition and fulfil his campaign promise.

How President Tinubu intends to compete with Russia

On Friday, June 16, which made it exactly 19 days since Tinubu took the oath of office as President of Nigeria, the West African country entered a Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with at least five African countries.

The deal, according to The Punch, was tagged "$30bn Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline Project", and it was struck at the headquarters of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Abuja.

Nigeria entered the deal with the five African countries separately through the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

5 Countries Tinubu is in alliance with to compete with Russia

The countries involved in the deal are:

  1. Morocco, through the Office National des Hydrocarbures et des Mines of Morocco.
  2. Ivory Coast, through the Société Nationale des Opérations Pétrolières of Cote d’Ivoire.
  3. Liberia, through the National Oil Company of Liberia.
  4. Benin Republic, through the Société Nationale des Hydrocarbures of Benin.
  5. The Republic of Guinea, through the Société Nationale des Pétroles of the Republic of Guinea.

President Tinubu promised to compete with Russia in supplying gas to Europe

President Tinubu, in one of his engagements with the business community tagged "Business Lunch with Asiwaju" in Lagos, during his campaigns in the 2023 presidential election, urged European countries to spare some money from going to space and invest in Gas supply from Africa, particularly Nigeria.

He said, "I don't care about what Russia will say, I want to compete."

President Tinubu also reiterated his commitment to ensuring that Nigeria competes with Russia in supplying gas to Europe in Ondo state when he met with the chairman of the Ondo Council of traditional rulers, the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi.

"APC has not compiled any ministerial list for President Tinubu": NWC says

Legit.ng reported that the APC national working committee (NWC) has commented on the claim that the party will have some influence on the ministerial list of President Bola Tinubu.

Members of the committee who spoke in separate interviews said the party would not have an influence on the list.

Bala Ibrahim and Nze Chidi Duru, the director of Publicity for the party and the APC Deputy National Organising secretary, maintained that the ministerial list is at the prerogative of the president.
