Islamic scholar explains religious view on grave renovations

Dr. Mubarak A. Yusuff, an expert in Qur’an exegesis and Islamic traditions, has reacted to the transformation of the late president Muhammadu Buhari’s burial site.

Speaking with Legit.ng, the expert who is also a lecturer of Islamic Studies, stressed the need to uphold religious principles while also considering contemporary realities.

As he put it:

“We have to continue upholding our religious practices. At the same time, we need to consider the contemporary changes in our environment.”

According to him, Buhari’s position as a national figure makes his case unique:

“The contemporary circumstance about former President Muhammadu Buhari is that he is not just a man for himself. He is a national leader, a statesman, an elder statesman, an immediate past president of the nation.”

From the Islamic perspective, Dr. Yusuff explained that every act in Islam is judged under one of five rulings.

“Whatever we do, Islam will view it in one of these five ways. It is either Wājib, i.e., it is compulsory that we do it; Mandūb, i.e., it is encouraged but not really compulsory; Muḥarram, i.e., totally prohibited; Makrūh, i.e., discouraged but not totally prohibited; or (Mubah), i.e., it is permissible, do it any way you like,” he explained.

He said the beautification of graves falls under the category of makrūh, meaning it is discouraged:

“Everything that has been done to his (late Buhari) grave, if we look at it from the classical religious perspective, is under the rule of makrūh in Islam. It is not totally prohibited, but it is discouraged. Because when people beautify a grave, it is a step towards a prohibited act, which is going there to worship the place.”
“Any act that would lead to a prohibited act is deemed a discouraged act in Islam. The beautification of a grave is discouraged. That is the ruling in the classical Islamic view,” he reiterated.

Other ways to dignify late president - Dr. Yusuff

However, Dr. Yusuff noted that Buhari’s national role provides context for the government’s decision:

“When we consider the contemporary circumstance of former President Muhammadu Buhari, we see the country needs to teach everyone that when you do good, when you serve the country, the country will know the value of your šëŕvïtùdë.”

Reactions as Tinubu mentions what Buhari actually left behind

While acknowledging the Islamic reservations, Dr. Yusuff said the act can be tolerated in this instance.

“Even though the justification of the graveyard is linked to prohibition in Islam, but because this man is the immediate past president, we can say, what the government has done by beautifying his grave is not too bad. We should ensure that people don’t go there to worship the grave, because that is the fear of Islam about grave beautification,” he again cautioned.

He further urged the government and citizens to explore more meaningful ways to honour the late president:

“Islam allows the nation to show more gratitude to statesmen who have passed away. Even aside from the beautification of his grave, there are a lot of better ways that Islam wants the country to use to dignify the name and the glory of their past heroes, such as building a university in his name, establishing mosques, or humanitarian projects.”
