Breaking: Lagos Declares Fresh Public Holiday, Details Emerge

The Lagos government has disclosed that the 2025 Isese Day will be held on Wednesday, August 20, in the state. As a result of this, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has declared the day a public holiday for all public servants in the state.
Sanwo-Olu maintained that the public holiday was to commemorate the 2025 Isese Day. This was announced in a circular issued by the office of the Head of Service, Huiel Bode Agoro, with reference number CIR/HOS/’25/Vol.I/064.

How Lagos state announced a public holiday
Leadership reported that the memo was addressed to government officials, including the deputy governor, speaker of the state house of assembly, the chief judge of the state and commissioners. Others included chairmen of local governments, local council development areas, permanent secretaries and Heads of state government agencies, among others.
The circular noted that the development was part of the commitment of Governor Sanwo-Olu in affirming the promotion of indigenous culture, heritage and tradition, while giving adequate support for the traditional institutions in the state.
The statement reads in part:
"Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has declared Wednesday, 20th August, 2025, as Work-Free Day for Lagos State Public Servants in commemoration of the Day.”

According to the statement, people should resume normal work activities on Thursday, August 21, 2025, at 8 am. He urged all account officers to ensure that the information is widely circulated across ministries, departments and government agencies.
Isese Day is one of the annual celebrations by the adherents of traditional religion in Yorubaland. It is observed to preserve and honour the Lagos people's rich cultural heritage. The government of the state has recently institutionalised the day, while recognising the impact of traditional belief in the state's social and cultural landscape.
Aside from Lagos, other states in the Southwest, predominantly inhabited by the Yoruba people, are expected to follow in the footsteps of the state and announce a public holiday for the Isese Day celebration. The other states that are expected to declare a public holiday for the Isese Day celebration include Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo and Ekiti.

Lagos lawmaker dies
Legit.ng earlier reported that Lagos councillor representing Ward C1 in the Ibeju-Lekki local government area of the state, Oluwakemi Rufai, has been declared dead.
The Lagos lawmaker died just two weeks after she was sworn in as the only female lawmaker in the Ibeju-Lekki LGA.
Rufai's death was confirmed in a statement by the state chapter of the APC, noting that the lawmaker passed away in the early hours of Wednesday, August 13.
