Presidency Speaks on Alleged Plan to Extend Deadline for Old Naira Notes Swap

State House, Abuja - The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, has reacted to the speculations that President Buhari may be mulling an extension of the validity of the old naira notes by 60 days.

TheCable had reported that the federal government proposed conditions on the naira redesign policy, including a new deadline of April 10 for the old notes.

However, the presidential spokesman Garba Shehu said he is not in a position to confirm or deny the speculation, Channels TV reported.

Meanwhile, Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna state has shared details of the federal government's alleged plans to extend the deadline for the swapping of the old Naira notes.

The Kaduna state governor, in a statement released by Muyiwa Adekeye, his special adviser on Media and Communication, said the governors suing the FG have rejected the offer and explained why.

He said senior officials of the FG reached some governors, including him, on phone to initiate discussions on a possible out-of-court settlement.

"The terms they proposed were to allow only the old N200 note to remain legal tender and be circulated by the CBN till 10 April 2023. They claimed that the CBN had already destroyed the old N500 and N1000 notes that had been deposited, but that those persons who still held the old notes could redeem them up to 10 April 2023.
"These were not considered as serious proposals, for obvious reasons. Circulating the old N200 notes alone would not be sufficient to relieve widespread human suffering in Kaduna State, and indeed in Nigeria today. They knew that and that is why they falsely claimed that the CBN had already destroyed the old N500 and N1000 notes," the Kaduna governor said.

Supreme Court takes another crucial decision in case against CBN’s Naira redesign policy

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Supreme Court on Wednesday, February 15 adjourned the case over the CBN policy on naira swap.

The apex court adjourned proceedings until Wednesday, February 22.

Recall that at the previous court session, the Supreme Court gave a ruling against the stipulated deadline for the usage of the naira note communicated by the CBN to the public. The apex court mandated that the old notes remain legal tender until the hearing of the suit.
