2023 Elections: IGP Sends Important Message to Policemen Over Attitude of Politicians

  • The Inspector-General of Police has advised men of the Nigeria Police Force to be apolitical during and after the polls
  • Usman Baba told policemen not to throw away their professionalism, urging them to shun sentiments and primordial interest while discharging their duty
  • Baba urged the operatives to remain loyal and honest to Nigeria by providing the citizens enough security for them to go around performing their lawful duties

A serious message has been sent to the men of the Nigeria Police Force by the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba.

The IGP asked the officers to be apolitical before, during, and after the next general elections.

The IG issued the warning during a visit to the Kogi state police command headquarters in Lokoja on Monday, November 21, Punch Newspaper reports.

“Let me sound a note of warning to you all: be apolitical before, during, and after the forthcoming election. You must not allow yourselves to be used because they will dump you after the elections.
“You have a duty and responsibility to uphold the constitution and to protect the lives and property of citizens; you cannot afford to fail in carrying out these tasks.”

However, the police boss also promised to look into the challenges facing the officers, especially the rank and file, with a view to providing an enabling environment that would bring out the best in them.

IGP reveals governors sponsoring violence against opponents in their states

Meanwhile, the IGP alleged that some governors were responsible for thugs who disrupt political activities and rallies of opponents in their states.

The police boss said this on Thursday, November 17, while speaking with political parties, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and political parties and other stakeholders in the 2023 election

However, Alkali-Baba did not mention the names of the governors while revealing that about 52 political violence cases have so far been recorded since the start of the 2023 presidential election campaign. He noted that the police will not hesitate to address the emerging problem.

Police arrest ex-convict hours after release from prison in Lagos

In another development, the Lagos state police command disclosed it arrested an ex-convict a few hours after his release from prison.

The arrest of the suspect, identified simply as Yakub Yusuf and aged 23, was made by the Operatives of Rapid Response Squad on Saturday morning, November 12.

Yusuf was nabbed after illegally coming into the Lagos State Fire Service premises to steal valve covers of old fire trucks under repair.
