2023: Harry-Banigo, Wike’s Deputy, 2 Others Emerge PDP Senatorial Candidates

  • Dr. Ipalibo Harry-Banigo has been elected as the senatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Rivers West senatorial district
  • Harry-Banigo is the current deputy governor of the state and his believed to enjoy the support of Governor Wike
  • Senator Barry Mpigi and Chief Alwell Onyesoh were also elected unopposed in the just concluded primary

Rivers State deputy governor, Dr. Ipalibo Harry-Banigo, was on Monday elected as the senatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Rivers West senatorial district.

Also, elected as PDP senatorial candidates for Rivers South-East and Rivers East senatorial districts, were Senator Barry Mpigi and Chief Alwell Onyesoh, respectively.

While Mpigi is the current Senator representing the Rivers South-East senatorial district in the National Assembly, Onyesoh was Rivers State Commissioner for Education, during the administration of former governor Peter Odili.

The trio emerged unopposed as all others who picked the PDP senatorial forms from the three senatorial districts were disqualified by the party’s Senatorial Screening Committee.

The senatorial primaries, which held simultaneously in Ahoada Town, Bori and Port Harcourt, were conducted amidst tight security.

It was further observed that at the Port Harcourt City local government secretariat, venue of the PDP primaries, there were more than 1,000 policemen and other security operatives as well as over 28 patrol vehicles on ground.

Meanwhile, the governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike on Thursday, May 19, reminded members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that people like Atiku Abubakar betrayed the party in 2015.

Wike while with party delegates and leaders in Ibadan, Oyo state capital city said the presidential aspirants who betrayed the party do not deserve to hold the PDP presidential ticket for the 2023 election.

The governor alleged that these members parading themselves as presidential aspirants ahead of the election next year caused disunity in the PDP in 2015. The battle for who gets the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)'s presidential ticket has continued to tear the governors apart.

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state and former Senate President Bukola Saraki is the main contenders jostling for the ticket ahead of the 2023 elections.

Meanwhile, Atiku Abubakar seems to be having only the support of his home state governor, Ahmadu Fintri.
