Good news as FG begins distribution of N20,000 each to poor victims of COVID-19
- The federal government commenced the distribution of small grants to some rural women in Yobe state
- According to Sadiya Farouk, humanitarian affairs minister, N20,000 each will be disbursed to about 10,000 beneficiaries to cushion the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic
- The minister said the small grant is being shared to help more people get access to financial capital so they can contribute to the economy

The federal government has commenced the distribution of cash relief to poor and vulnerable rural women affected by the Boko Haram insurgency and the COVID-19 pandemic in Yobe state.
Channels TV reported the humanitarian affairs minister, Sadiya Farouk, launched the programme in Damaturu, the state capital.
Farouk said the grant is aimed at increasing access to financial capital for an improved economy.

The minister said the Yobe state government had earlier received over N980 million under the federal government's conditional cash transfer programme, adding that six other local government councils are currently benefiting from the programme.
She explained that the sum of N20,000 will be disbursed to about 10,000 beneficiaries to cushion the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The cash relief programme was introduced in 2020 by President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration with the aim of poverty alleviation.
Among other things, the conditional cash transfer programme aims to encourage household financial and asset acquisition, engage beneficiaries to attain sustainable livelihood, and improve school enrolment and attendance.

Meanwhile, the federal government said it has adopted proactive measures to fast track the implementation of social investment programmes to support vulnerable persons toward mitigating the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Umar-Farouk, minister of humanitarian affairs, disaster management and social development, stated this in Kano at the inauguration of the One UN Basket Fund project.
Represented by Bashir Nura-Alkali, the permanent secretary of the ministry, the minister said that the federal government was placing premiums on such programmes to shore up the economic fortunes of the people.
