Nigeria Police Force crack down on criminal gangs in Akwa Ibom state

- Recent civil disturbances in some parts of Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state capital have been addressed

- This is due to a coordinated raid by the Akwa Ibom state police command on criminal elements within the state capital

The Akwa Ibom state command of the Nigeria Police Force has begun cracking down on criminal gangs within Uyo metropolis.

The initiative comes barely 24 hours after Governor Udom Emmanuel rejigged the security apparatus of the state to tackle growing violent crimes and insecurity as Yuletide approaches.

The governor had on Thursday, December 10 donated 30 patrol trucks to security agencies in the state and reactivated the popular Joint Security Task Force as a rapid response to quell the crime wave which was threatening the peace and tranquility of Akwa Ibom.

While receiving the vehicles on behalf of heads of security agencies in the state, the commissioner of police, Andrew Amiengheme, thanked the governor for being sensitive to the plight of the people and for supporting them to deliver on their mandate.

Subsequently, the Akwa Ibom state police command swung into immediately conducting precision strikes at strategic locations and raided criminal hideouts which have yielded results.

A statement from the command seen by Legit.ng indicates that so far, over 40 suspected armed robbers and cultists been arrested within Uyo Metropolis alone.

It was gathered that tactical teams of the force, relying on credible information, planned a painstaking operation to weed out criminals and armed gangs who have been making the state capital unsafe.

“These hideouts are believed to be part of the nest hibernating some of the hoodlums responsible for Wednesday night's breach of peace within Uyo.”

The statement further revealed that items recovered from some of the gangs were two locally made pistols, five cutlasses, a bag of substance suspected to be Indian hemp, and others which will be as exhibits during prosecution.

Meanwhile, in Delta, Operation Delta Hawk, a new security outfit floated by the state government to enhance the security of lives and property in the state has been inaugurated by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.

Inaugurating the new security outfit at its official headquarters in Asaba, Governor Okowa said the outfit was a proactive step towards checkmating insecurity in all parts of the state headlong.

A statement from the Delta state government seen by Legit.ng on Thursday, December 10, quoted the governor as saying the challenge of insecurity was already taking an alarming dimension.

Recently, gunmen suspected to be kidnappers laid siege on the Benin-Auchi on Thursday, December 3 and kidnapped a sizable number of commuters travelling to various destinations.

Two persons were killed while over 20 others were abducted at gunpoint by the bandits at Obagie community end of the road in Uhunmwonde local government area of Edo state.

It was gathered that the gunmen emerged from the bush and forced the commercial bus to stop at gunpoint and then whisked away passengers into the bush.
