- The 2020 Ondo governorship election will be another battle between Eyitayo Jegede of the PDP and Governor Akeredolu
- Jegede clinched the PDP ticket in the primary election conducted on Wednesday
- The PDP candidate had contested for the governorship seat in the 2016 election but lost to the incumbent governor, Akeredolu
The Peoples Democratic Party has successfully conducted its governorship primary election, with Eyitayo Jegede(SAN), emerging the winner.
Jegede defeated seven other aspirants, including Agboola Ajayi, the embattled deputy governor of Ondo state who recently dumped the ruling All Progressives Congress to fight for the PDP's ticket.
Recall that Jegede was the PDP candidate in the 2016 election. He lost to the incumbent governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.
Having clinched the PDP ticket again, Jegede will be slugging it out with Governor Akeredolu who had also clinched the APC ticket to contest the October 10 election.
"Breaking News! @TayoJegedeSAN, former Guber Candidate of @OfficialPDPNig in the 2016 election has won the Ondo state PDP Governoship Primary. He defeated other aspirants with a total vote of 888, while the current Deputy Governor, Agboola Ajayi came 2nd with 657 votes. Congrats!" the PDP also announced on Twitter.
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the Ondo state police command deployed no fewer than 800 personnel to monitor the PDP governorship primary election in the state.
The police public relations officer in the state, ASP Tee-Leo Ikoro, disclosed this while speaking with newsmen at the venue of the primary election in Akure on Wednesday, July 22.
He said police were on ground not just because of the primary but because they are always in the frontline when it comes to security.
He said: “We have mapped out the whole place like we did during the APC governorship primary election on Monday to ensure that there is no problem throughout the election.
"Right here we have about 800 personnel and also have other sister agencies to support in ensuring the security of this place. We are certain nobody will misbehave this time around because all politicians are aware that today is for election and not to cause any unwarranted issues.
“If you have come to vote, vote and go and if you have any support to give to your person you can do that after leaving this place.”
