7 EFCC officials reportedly arrested over alleged plot to smuggle Maina out of custody

- Seven operatives of the EFCC are being interrogated for complicity in a reported plot to smuggle AbdulRasheed Maina out of the custody the anti-corruption agency

- The operatives of the EFCC along with a woman, Zainab Abbas, are now being interrogated over their part in the reported botched plot

- A source says it could not be immediately ascertained if Zainab was contracted by members of a pension syndicate to set Maina free

A reported plot to smuggle former Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT) chairman, Abdulrasheed Maina, out of the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been foiled by the anti-corruption agency.

The Nation reports that seven operatives of the EFCC along with a woman named Zainab Abbas, are now being interrogated over their part in the botched plot to smuggle Maina who is facing investigation for alleged N2.1 billion fraud.

A source told the newspaper that the woman was brought into the visitors’ area to meet with Maina with her telephone.

She was alleged to be making efforts to procure some purported military personnel to execute the plan to get Maina out in a commando style," the source said.

“It could not be immediately ascertained if Maina was in the picture of what was being planned or if Zainab was contracted by members of pension syndicate to set Maina free.

The source said the operatives on duty that night were arrested, questioned and detained and are being investigated for suspected complicity in the plot.

Meanwhile, Faisal Abdulrasheed Maina, accused of embezzling N24 billion is reported to be making confessions in custody.

Vanguard reports that a top EFCC source who asked not to be named claimed that Maina was already disclosing how he allegedly spent the money.

The money was reportedly meant to be used to pay off millions of the federal government’s retirees across the world.
