The xenophobic attacks on foreigners in South Africa have been condemned by Mangosuthu Buthelezi, a politician and leader of the Zulu ethnic group.

Buthelezi, while addressing an armed mob in Johannesburg on Sunday, September 8, reminded his countrymen how many African nations played key roles in the struggles of South Africa, The Cable reports.

Legit.ng gathers that the respected leader pointed out that the world expects that South Africans would treat other Africans as their brothers.

Buhtelezi reminded the mob that South Africa was assisted during apartheid by countries whose citizens were being attacked at the moment.

He also recalled how he was invited over to Nigeria by former president Olusegun Obasanjo, when South Africa was still ruled by the white minority government, adding that he also delivered a lecture at the former president’s 82nd birthday celebration.

He described Obasanjo as a giant of Africa and wondered aloud, what South Africans were doing to his people.

He said: “We dare not forget or disregard all that was done for us by African leaders like His Excellency President Olusegun Obasanjo.

“As a member of the Commonwealth Eminent Persons Group, General Obasanjo revealed to the world the real conditions of our people under apartheid. He supported us in our stand against the regime’s plan to deprive us of our citizenship.

“In fact, on the very day that Transkei took so-called independence, president Obasanjo arranged for me and my wife to be in Nigeria so that I could avoid attending Transkei’s independence ceremony.

“General Obasanjo invited me to Nigeria again this year, where I delivered a lecture in celebration of his 82nd birthday.

Recall that Legit.ng previously reported that residents of hostels in eastern Johannesburg marched along Jules Street in the area on Sunday, demanding that "foreigners must go back to where they came from".

The marchers carried weapons such as knobkerries, as they headed to Jules Park, where they were to be addressed by Zulu tribe leader and notable politician, Mangosuthu Buthelezi.

Without indicating reasons for their call, the group maintained that it wanted foreign nationals to leave.
