Following Nigeria's independence in 1960, the nation experienced a significant rise in armed robbery incidents. This period marked the beginning of a challenging era, with criminal activities escalating and leaving behind numerous victims and a legacy of fear. The surge in armed robbery became a pressing concern for the newly independent nation.
Infamous armed robbers and their reign
Over the decades, Nigeria witnessed the emergence of several notorious armed robbers whose activities left indelible marks on the country's history. These individuals became infamous for their audacious crimes and the terror they inflicted on communities.
Ishola Oyenusi: Often regarded as Nigeria's first celebrated armed robber, Oyenusi was active in the early 1970s. He was known for his ruthless operations and was eventually executed in 1971.
Isiaka 'Mighty Joe' Busari: A protégé of Oyenusi, Mighty Joe continued the legacy of violent robberies in the 1970s. His reign of terror ended with his execution in 1973.
Lawrence Anini: In the 1980s, Anini and his gang terrorised Benin City and its environs. His criminal activities prompted a nationwide manhunt, culminating in his arrest and execution in 1987.
Shina Rambo: Active in the 1990s, Rambo was notorious for his cross-border crimes between Nigeria and neighbouring countries. His operations were marked by violence and mysticism.
Abiodun 'Godogodo' Egunjobi: From the early 2000s to 2013, Godogodo led a gang responsible for numerous bank robberies and killings in Lagos and the Southwest. His arrest in 2013 marked the end of a decade-long criminal career.
Law enforcement and public response
The persistent threat of armed robbery led to various responses from law enforcement agencies and the public. In 1992, the Nigerian Police Force established the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) to combat the rising menace. While SARS achieved some successes, it later faced criticism and allegations of human rights abuses, leading to widespread protests and calls for reform.
