Super Eagles Striker Retires From Professional Football After Spells Europe

  • Anthony Ujah has retired from professional football, announcing his decision after fulfilling his childhood dream

  • Ujah expressed gratitude to his family, clubs, coaches, and teammates for their support throughout his career

Nigerian forward Anthony Ujah has called it quits with professional football as he announced his retirement at the age of 34.

The striker started his career at local club Abuja FC in 2005 before moving to NPFL outfit Warri Wolves two years later.

He headed to Europe in 2010 and joined Norwegian club Lillestrom, where he scored 27 goals in 37 league matches over two seasons.

Ujah also had stints in Germany, China and Bulgaria, where he played just one league game for Botev Plovdiv, after making a huge fortune.

He took to his Instagram handle to disclose that he has fulfilled his childhood dream. He said:

"Taking to Today, I make the toughest decision of my life, retiring from professional football.
"First of all, I want to thank Almighty God for the gift of this talent, for guiding me through every step of my football journey, and for giving me the strength to face both the good days and the difficult ones.
"To my family, your love, prayers, and sacrifices have been my foundation. Without you, none of this would have been possible.
"I also want to thank every club I have played for, every coach who believed in me, and every teammate who fought beside me on the pitch. Together, we’ve shared victories that will forever warm my heart and defeats that taught me resilience.
"Fulfilling a childhood dream of playing for my country (SUPER EAGLES) is one i will forever live to cherish. Football has been more than a game for me, it has been my passion, my identity, my home.

"I will truly miss the emotions, the atmosphere, the dressing room laughter, the celebrations, and even the hard days that made the good ones sweeter.
"A new chapter begins, but my love for football will never end. Thank you all for being part of my story."

He remains a cult hero in Germany, having amassed 136 Bundesliga appearances and registered 30 goals for clubs Mainz, Cologne, Werder Bremen, and Union Berlin, per All Nigeria Soccer.

Anthony Ujah is the third on the list of Nigerian all-time scorers in the German topflight, behind Jonathan Akpoborie (61) and Victor Agali (32).

The star, who was born in Ugbokolo, Benue State, earned seven caps for the Nigerian national football team between 2013 and 2025.

His career was cut short following a serious patellar tendon tear sustained during a Europa League qualifier for Bulgarian side Botev Plovdiv against Panathinaikos.
