The Nigerian football community has been thrown into mourning as Shooting Stars assistant coach Akin Olowokere collapsed and died on Monday morning, August 11.
The tactician, who was recently added to the 3SC technical crew following the departure of Gbenga Ogunbote’s team, slumped on the pitch and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A former player for Sunshine Stars of Akure, Olowokere was a well-respected figure in Nigerian football.

He previously served as assistant coach under Edith Agoye at Sunshine Stars before joining 3SC, per Vanguard.
Olowokere also had a stint with Ekiti United, where he was in charge for just two months before announcing his resignation, citing personal reasons.

As of the time of filing this report, there is no official statement from Shooting Stars over the possible cause of his death. However, fans have taken to social media to react.

Nigerian star dies in London
This follows the story of a young Nigerian footballer, Ethan Ade-Oduwale, who died at the age of 10 in Charlton Athletic Football Club’s academy in England.
Until his death, Ade-Oduwale, who was loved and cherished by coaches and teammates, was a member of Charlton’s U10 team.
The club expressed sadness upon learning of the tragic passing of the prodigy, describing him as "a cherished member of our academy’s U10s team."

Allen Waobikeze dies
Legit.ng earlier reported that a former Nigerian international Allen Okwuchukwu Waobikeze passed away at the age of 59, on Sunday night, July 14, 2025.
The ex-international made limited appearances in the Nigerian squad due to an array of stars on the left wing.
Popularly known as 'Babaoo' by the fans, Waobikeze played for top clubs in the Nigeria Premier League like Sharks FC of Port Harcourt, BCC Lions of Gboko, and Iwuanyanwu Nationale.
