Following the feat, Rivers Angels will also represent Nigeria on the continent. However, a clip showing a chaotic scene has gone viral on the internet as raging players chased the centre referee around the pitch.

She was eventually protected by top officials as well as security operatives that were present at the stadium. Respected Nigerian journalist Oni Afolabi said:

“Clubs and league organisers should educate their players about how to stay professional and the implication of disrespecting the game, while the referees on the other hand should also be fair all the time and follow the laws of the game to the letter.
"It shows the level at which the Women Professional League is. For players to have the effrontery to attack the referee, there are factors involved
"One, they felt so cheated by her action and got carried away. Their emotions got the best out of them and they decided to take laws into their hands.

In a bid to prevent the reoccurrence of such an act, Oni Afolabi urges the league organisers to provide adequate security for the safety of match officials at all times. He added:

“Regarding the safety of referees, the organisers (league body, host football association) must provide adequate security for all to prevent funny situations like this.”
