APC Dynamics in Ogun East Reveal Focus on Consensus and Capability

The ongoing conversations around the APC ticket for Ogun East Senatorial District reflect the vibrancy of our democracy and the desire of our people for effective representation. While opinions may differ, they must be grounded in fairness, context, and a full appreciation of the realities of governance.

At its core, Governor Dapo Abiodun’s governance approach is anchored on collaboration, institutional continuity, and long-term development. Far from operating in isolation, the government has worked harmoniously with critical stakeholders across party lines, traditional institutions, the business community, and federal authorities to deliver tangible results for the people of Ogun State.

Now, it is important to recognise that governance, by its very nature, involves managing complex interests, differing perspectives, and evolving political dynamics. Disagreements are not evidence of dysfunction; rather, they are often part of the negotiation process that strengthens democratic institutions. What matters is not the absence of differing views but the ability to engage, align, and move forward in the collective interest.

It is also essential to situate political relationships within their proper context. In a dynamic political environment, alignments evolve, interests shift, and engagements are continuously recalibrated. This is not unique to Ogun State, nor does it diminish the Governor’s capacity to work with others. Indeed, there have been ongoing engagements with key leaders and stakeholders aimed at strengthening unity within the party and advancing the state’s collective interests.

Key examples include the recent high-level engagements where Governor Abiodun, alongside elder statesmen such as Chief Olusegun Osoba and other former governors, presented a unified front in advancing the state’s interests at the national level. These moments underscore mutual respect and a shared vision for Ogun’s future, built on dialogue rather than division. Relationships with traditional rulers have also been strengthened through deliberate support, including the provision of operational vehicles to enhance their roles as custodians of peace and development.

It is true that a Senator must secure projects, influence allocations, and embed local priorities into national frameworks. And this is precisely what Governor Abiodun has been doing, operating with a legislative-style strategy to achieve executive success.

The monumental infrastructural upgrades in Ogun State were not built by executive fiat; they are the products of painstaking negotiation, lobbying, and collaboration with federal agencies, private sector leaders, and local communities. Consider the following:

The Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport: Bringing this project to life required complex alignment with the Federal Ministry of Aviation, customs authorities, and global logistics investors.

FDI and Economic Transformation: By streamlining regulations through the Ogun State Investment Promotion Agency (OGUNIPA), Abiodun’s collaborative approach helped Ogun State attract over 70 per cent of all Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) entering Nigeria in 2025.

Infrastructure: The reconstruction of over 1,600 kilometres of roads, including the critical Sagamu-Interchange-Abeokuta and Ijebu-Ode-Epe corridors, was achieved through strategic partnerships between the state, federal government, and private contractors.

These are not the achievements of a lone wolf; they are the hallmarks of a leader who understands how to negotiate outcomes and synergise competing interests for the common good.

In addition, they did not occur in a vacuum; they reflect strong partnerships with the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as evidenced by joint project commissions and policy alignments.

Governance in a complex state like Ogun requires balancing diverse interests while maintaining focus on delivery. The administration has prioritised institutional continuity, economic growth, improved security architecture, healthcare, education, and human capital development, all while fostering an enabling environment for businesses. This people-centred approach has earned broad support within the APC family in Ogun East, where stakeholders recently endorsed Governor Abiodun as a consensus candidate for the senatorial ticket based on his performance and capacity to attract federal attention and projects to the district.

The Senate, as a chamber of legislation and oversight, indeed thrives on negotiation, consensus-building, and relational capital. Governor Abiodun’s track record as an executive who has successfully navigated complex stakeholder dynamics, delivering infrastructure despite national economic challenges, equips him with practical experience in turning vision into executable outcomes through collaboration.

For the past several years, Governor Abiodun has functioned as the Chief Marketer, Chief Negotiator, and Chief Diplomat for Ogun State. He has successfully brokered peace among varied community interests to establish Industrial Parks and Free Trade Zones. He has sat at the table with foreign diplomats, federal legislators, and local chiefs, speaking the language of mutual benefit and sustainable growth.

Politics is inherently competitive, and robust debate strengthens our processes. However, Ogun State’s progress under this administration shows what is possible when leaders focus on unifying development goals over perpetual friction. The administration remains open to constructive engagement with all genuine stakeholders who share the goal of a more prosperous, industrially vibrant, and inclusive Ogun State.

Ogun East does not need a representative who is merely learning the ropes of federal lobbying. It needs a tested negotiator. It needs a leader who already possesses the national contact base, the administrative visibility, and the undeniable track record of transforming localised visions into federal and global realities.

As the 2027 elections approach, Ogun East has the opportunity to send not just a politician, but a proven consensus-builder to the Red Chamber.
