Breaking: Ex-CPC Chairman Dumps Atiku Ahead of 2027 Election as Reasons and Details Emerge

  • CPC Forum distances itself from Atiku visit, insisting it was the personal decision of a few members and not the collective position of the group
  • 20 state chairmen reaffirm loyalty to APC and Tinubu, despite claims of financial inducements from opposition leaders to defect ahead of 2027
  • Forum demands inclusion within APC, warning against continued neglect of the CPC bloc while reaffirming loyalty to leaders like Al-Makura, Masari, and Abbas

The Forum of State Chairmen of the defunct Congress for Progressives Change (CPC) has disowned the recent visit of some of its members to the Abuja residence of former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar.

In a statement issued on Saturday, September 20, the Forum stressed that the visit was a personal decision of a few individuals and did not reflect the collective stance of the group.

“The gathering of CPC elements at Atiku’s residence was nothing short of a move to give the former Vice President a misleading impression of widespread support,” the Forum declared.

Pressure from opposition leaders

The Forum also revealed that members had been under pressure from opposition leaders who allegedly offered financial inducements to lure them away from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The statement read,

“We wish to categorically state that 20 members of the group remain committed to the APC."

It further noted that one of its members from Borno state had died, leaving 20 state chairmen loyal to President Bola Tinubu.

Call for inclusion within APC

Despite reaffirming its loyalty to the APC, the Forum urged the Presidency and the party’s leadership to address what it described as “the continued neglect of the CPC bloc within the APC.”

“This moment calls for reflection, especially by the Presidency and the APC leadership, to urgently address the continued marginalisation of the CPC bloc, particularly the Forum of State Chairmen who are feeling increasingly alienated,” the statement added.

The group reminded the APC leadership of its pivotal role in the formation of the party.

Reaffirming loyalty to CPC leaders

The Forum also reaffirmed its loyalty to prominent CPC bloc leaders including Senator Tanko Al-Makura, Aminu Masari, and Tajudeen Abbas.

“We remain loyal, patient, but firm in our resolve to demand for better patronage just as we pray that the Almighty God shall continue to guide Mr President and indeed all our leaders,” the statement concluded.

Atiku, who has renounced his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is reportedly working to build a coalition to challenge President Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

Though he has yet to officially declare for any political party, indications suggest that the former Vice President may formally join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the polls.

Already, former governors Nasir El-Rufai and Rotimi Amaechi, alongside ex-Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, are said to be working with Atiku to stop Tinubu’s re-election bid.
