Segun Showunmi sticks with APC

Showunmi, the chief promoter and national coordinator of the Alternative Movement, said:

"I kept saying consistently: you cannot say decamptation (sic) is the same thing as visitation. If I want to decamp to the APC, I'm quite able to do that. I am not decamping at this time."

Legit.ng reports that in November 2024, Showunmi launched the National Opposition Movement Coalition (NOMC), also known as ‘The Alternative,’ "aimed at reviving Nigeria’s democracy."

Showunmi, while briefing journalists in Abuja at the unveiling of the movement, highlighted the urgent need for a credible opposition to counterbalance government activities and restore citizens’ faith in democratic processes.

He emphasised that the coalition would not evolve into a political party but would serve as a civic platform to engage political actors, national stakeholders, civil society, and democratic institutions.

He explained that the movement plans to focus on advocacy and voter education to combat vote trading, a practice Showunmi described as a ‘highest bidder heist’ undermining Nigeria’s democratic values.

In early July 2025, “The Alternative” held a town hall meeting in Abeokuta, Ogun state. The event drew participants across party lines, including members of the APC, PDP, Labour Party (LP).

There, Showunmi, a former governorship aspirant of the PDP in Ogun state, criticised promoters of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition. According to him, they cannot unseat the APC.

He said:

“Those coming together under the ADC banner cannot offer a compelling alternative to President Bola Tinubu. It is a theatre of political convenience, not a serious opposition platform."

Segun Showunmi speaks on cabal

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Showunmi stated that there is no cabal in Tinubu’s administration as presumed by some Nigerians.

Showunmi said Tinubu is a cabal on his own and does everything himself, adding that the chief of staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, is not even allowed to do his job effectively.
