El-Rufai failed to honour the invitation extended to him by the Kaduna Police Command for questioning. However, the former governor explained that he was forced to alert the PSC after his earlier petition to Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector General of Police, did not address his earlier concerns about the actions of the officers.

He stated that the petition was a result of his "concern that the Nigerian Police, warts and all, is the only frontline law enforcement institution we have." The statement was signed by his media aide, Muyiwa Adekeye, in Kaduna on Monday, September 8.

The former governor explained that the citizens should not only support the PSC at all levels, but also ensure that it has the opportunity to deliver "its regulatory power" in enforcing discipline and promoting ethical and sound conduct.

El-Rufai accuses police of serving unconstitutional interests

Known for his fierce positions, the ex-governor alleged that some police officers are serving some interest against the provision of the law and insisted that their actions dirty the image of the police and hinder public confidence in the PSC leadership.

However, El-Rufai did not provide the details of the alleged misconduct in the petition, which was made available to the media. Sources around him who were privy to the development said it was linked to recent police actions allegedly targeting some of his political allies.

The Kaduna State Police Command had yet to react to the petition of the former governor's petition. The police in the northwest state had on Thursday, September 4, invited El-Rufai and some top members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for questioning.
