Southern PDP Governors, Others Meet Behind Closed-Doors, Details Emerge

Lagos state - Southern governors elected under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other stakeholders are meeting in Lagos state over the party’s zoning of offices.

The meeting, tagged “PDP Southern Zoning Consultative Summit,” is for the zoning ahead of the forthcoming convention of the party.

It was gathered that the meeting is coming amidst controversy over the zoning.

As reported by Daily Trust, Governors Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Douye Diri of Bayelsa, and the Deputy Governor of Enugu, Barrister Ifeanyi Ossai, who represents Governor Peter Mba, are in attendance.

Others include, Chairman Board of Trustees of the party, Senator Adelphus Wabara, former PDP Deputy National Chairman, Chief Olabode George; former Osun State Governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola; former Ebonyi State Governor, Sam Egwu; former Akwa Ibom governor, Udom Emmanuel; and former Oyo State Speaker, Jumoke Akinjide.

Also in attendance are Dr Ali Odefa, Chief Emma Ogidi, Hon. Nnena Ukeje, Dr. Eddy Olafeso, among others.

Some PDP stakeholders from the South have dismissed as illegal the meeting on the party’s zoning arrangement.

Despite the opposition to the meeting, the stakeholders are going ahead with the meeting, which started around 2:30 pm.

According to The Nation, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, said preparations are in full gear for the party's national convention scheduled for November 15–16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Ologunagba said the party has inaugurated the National Convention Organising Committee, chaired by Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri.

Battle for who becomes PDP chairman begins

Legit.ng earlier reported that the race for the PDP national chairmanship heats up as four key figures, including Jerry Gana and Ahmed Makarfi, emerge ahead of the November 15 convention.

The FCT minister, Nyesom Wike, warned that unresolved zoning issues may trigger a fresh crisis.

PDP leaders debate consensus candidacy; while some back it for unity, others fear it could suppress fair competition within the PDP.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that in a wider consultation on how to address the wave of defections and the crisis rocking the PDP, governors elected on the party's platform invited former governors and other stakeholders to a meeting on Sunday, May 11, in Abuja.

At the expanded meeting, the PDP leaders addressed key issues, including the upcoming national executive committee (NEC) meeting and the national elective convention.

The PDP Governors Forum and former governors named former Senate President Bukola Saraki the head of a seven-member reconciliation committee.
