  • Obi said he was in the state to visit two teaching hospitals, but beyond that, he said he came to discuss Nigeria's problem with Governor Bala
  • After the meeting, Obi disclosed the plan of the opposition leaders to dislodge President Bola Tinubu and the ruling APC in the 2027 general election

Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has explained that the best way to sack President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 election is for the opposition leaders to come together in collaboration and have a shift in the country's political culture.

Obi, a former governor of Anambra state, made the position during his official visit to the governor of Bauchi state, Bala Mohammed, who also doubled as the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors' forum, on Friday, August 8.

Why Peter Obi visited Bauchi state

Tribune reported that the presidential hopeful maintained that though he was in the state to visit two nursing schools but more importantly, he had visited the governor in order to find solutions to Nigerians' problems collaboratively.

Obi stressed that the opposition leaders have to work together for the sake of the country, expressing optimism that things will get better for the country and its future. His statement reads in part:

“To all of us in the opposition, it’s important that we work together. It’s no longer about us; it’s about our country. Our politics must change. It must be the politics of development, competence, capacity, and compassion.”

Peter Obi confirms talks with PDP

The former governor recently confirmed talks with the PDP and other opposition parties through the national coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Tanko Yunusa, in Abuja on Thursday, July 31. Yunusa explained that Obi was open to discussion with individuals and political parties, which can bring a new Nigeria.

Yunusa confirmed the overture with the PDP, stating that the discussion was no longer a secret because "the PDP has made and is still making overtures." He said the leading opposition is beckoning to the presidential hopeful. He noted that several PDP leaders have publicly commented on it.

He explained that, as Obi himself noted, the Labour Party chieftain is open to discussion that will rescue the country from its current socio-economic challenges. He said the discussion was not about Peter Obi in person but about Nigeria and Nigerians.

Why 36 governors may support Tinubu

Legit.ng earlier reported that Kaduna state governor Uba Sani posited that it would be difficult for any Nigerian governor not to support President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election.

Governor Sani explained that no Nigerian president has ever supported the states and local governments as Tinubu has done.

The Kaduna governor made the comment amid alignment and realignment from the ruling APC and other opposition parties in the country.
