According to the UK government's official guidance, both the applicant and their UK-based partner must together show a combined annual income of at least £29,000 (roughly ₦56.5 million) to qualify under the financial rules.

This threshold is known as the "minimum income requirement."
UK family visa: How combined income rule works
Rather than placing the full financial burden on one person, the rule allows both parties to count their individual earnings toward the £29,000 (roughly ₦56.5 million) figure.
This means that if one partner earns £15,000 a year and the other earns £14,000, their combined £29,000 would satisfy the requirement, provided they can back the figures with acceptable documentation.
The guidance makes clear that meeting the threshold alone is not enough. Applicants must also provide official proof of income, such as payslips, employer letters, or bank statements, to show that the declared earnings are genuine and verifiable.
UK family visa: Who rule applies to
The minimum income requirement applies specifically to those applying for a UK family visa on the basis of a partner or spousal relationship.
Both partners, whether the one already living in the UK or the one applying to join them, can contribute their income toward the combined total.
The UK government has stressed that failing to meet the financial requirement is one of the most common reasons family visa applications are refused, making it essential for couples to carefully calculate and document their earnings before submitting an application.
