Hundreds of youths on Friday participated in activities marking the 2026 International Quds Day across several Nigerian cities, including Abuja, Bauchi, Kano, Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Borno, Yobe, Gombe, Niger, Lagos, Ilorin and Ibadan.
In Abuja, participants gathered at the National Mosque where they observed Juma’at prayers before staging a procession in solidarity with the Palestinian people.

During the procession, some of the participants carried banners and placards expressing support for Palestine while chanting pro-Palestine slogans.
Security personnel were also deployed around the mosque area, although the gathering ended peacefully.
International Quds Day is observed annually on the last Friday of the Islamic month of Ramadan. It was established in 1979 by Iran’s late leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, as a day to express solidarity with Palestinians.
In Nigeria, the day has been observed for more than four decades by members of the Islamic Movement under the leadership of Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky through lectures, awareness campaigns and public processions.
Speaking in a statement, Shaikh Sidi Munir Mainasara Sokoto said the annual event is meant to highlight the plight of Palestinians and promote global awareness of their struggle.
“International Quds Day is an annual event held on the last Friday of the Islamic month of Ramadan,” he said.
“It was first established in 1979 by Imam Khomeini to express solidarity with the oppressed Palestinian people.”
According to him, the Islamic Movement has continued to mark the day in Nigeria through activities aimed at educating the public about the Palestinian cause.
“This is done through expressions of solidarity, awareness campaigns, public lectures, discussions, and processions aimed at educating the public that the struggle of the Palestinian people remains a pressing demand for justice and a moral issue for all people, regardless of political, religious, or ethnic identity,” he said.
Mainasara said the observance of Quds Day this year comes amid continued concerns over the humanitarian situation in Palestine.
“We strongly condemn the ongoing atrocities being committed by Israel against the Palestinian people and reiterate our call for the freedom and liberation of Palestine,” he said.
He added that Quds Day activities are held in several cities around the world, including Johannesburg, London, Berlin, Paris, Athens, Madrid, New York, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, Toronto, Sydney and Kuala Lumpur.
