How Tinubu Is Plotting to Trap Peter Obi and Atiku in 2027, Analysts Reveal
- A coalition of civil society groups urges Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi to unite under one platform to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election
- The groups warn that the APC has set up obstacles that make it nearly impossible for either opposition figure to win if they run separately
- Coalition research shows only a joint ticket can overcome what it describes as strategic barriers to a free and fair presidential contest
A coalition of civil society groups has warned that the opposition risks handing President Bola Tinubu an easy second term in 2027 unless former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi join forces.
The coalition issued the warning after a strategy meeting in Abuja that brought together members of the Save Democracy Mega Alliance (SDMA), the Civil Societies Alliance and other groups.

Coalition urges opposition unity before 2027 election
Speaking after the gathering, South South Coordinator of SDMA Tony Akeni said the coalition’s research shows that a divided opposition cannot defeat the All Progressives Congress' Tinubu in the next presidential election.
He said their study revealed “insurmountable obstacles” already being put in place by the ruling party to prevent a fair contest.
“If the right decisions are taken by stakeholders of our opposition political parties and electorates, we shall achieve the urgent objective of emancipating our country through the ballot in 2027,” Akeni said.
“If, however, leaders of the progressive opposition missed presidential victory in 2027 through wrong decisions, the consequences shall be dire for our nation in countless ways.”
Akeni described Atiku Abubakar, now a member of the African Democratic Congress, and Peter Obi of the Labour Party as the most credible figures to challenge the ruling party.

“Fortunately, today Nigeria is blessed with two outstanding political opposition figures, each one eminently qualified to preside over our country as President and recover our nation to the path of greatness from 2027 forward,” he said.
He warned that intelligence gathered over several months shows that the APC has already structured the political environment to frustrate any attempt by either Atiku or Obi to win if they contest separately.
“The second truth is that the ruling APC has strategically, scientifically put in place practically insurmountable obstacles designed to prevent free and fair elections through which either Atiku, contesting in a separate party ballot, or Peter Obi, contesting in another political party, should ever hope to emerge victorious in the 2027 Presidential election,” he said.
According to the coalition, the only way to overcome these barriers is for Atiku and Obi to close ranks and present a single presidential ticket.
Akeni said the administration’s alleged tactics will only succeed if both men “make the fatal, historically regrettable and irredeemable mistake of contesting the 2027 presidential election on the platforms of two separate or competing political parties.”
