The former minister suggested that the petition which triggered the DSS investigation came from political opponents in his home state.

"I would also like to congratulate the DSS on how professionally and openly they worked. I was also respected and treated with dignity and I am still willing to cooperate in full with the Department so their probe can be concluded successfully," Malami stated.

It is noted that Sowore was also indicted by the DSS for publishing "criminal, false, and malicious" publications against the president. Sowore, in his lengthy rebuttal of the DSS on X, revealed that he received a letter by post from the DSS, which in his own words, was delivered "stealthily" to the Abuja office of his lawyers.

In his response to the Director-General of the DSS, Uwem Davies, Sowore termed the agency's action "insidious, fundamentally defective, and unlawful." In a statement at the press, he added that the request by the DSS was "another attempt at repressive hostility" and discussed previous encounters with the agency, such as the unlawful detentions in 1993, 1996, and 2019.
