Nigerian Governor Sends Bill on Same-Sex Marriage to State Assembly

Kano State - Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has sent a bill seeking to outlaw same-sex marriage to the Kano State House of Assembly.
The bill also seeks to outlaw other practices deemed immoral in the northwest state.

Governor Yusuf said his administration would not compromise on the values and teachings of Islam.
As reported by Vanguard, Governor Yusuf said that Kano state must continue to uphold its cultural and religious heritage.
The governor approved the transmission of the bill while presiding over the 31st State Executive Council meeting at the Government House Annex in Kwankwasiyya City.
This was contained in a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, on Friday, September 12, 2025.
According to the statement, the bill specifically prohibits same-sex marriage as well as practices locally referred to as Madugo and Liwadi, which the government considers forbidden.
“Under no circumstances will we allow acts that contradict our religion and traditions to take root in Kano. This government is duty-bound to protect the moral integrity of our society.
“Upon passage into law by the State Assembly, offenders found guilty of engaging in or promoting same-sex marriage and related practices will face strict legal consequences.”
Governor Yusuf expressed confidence that lawmakers would treat the bill with urgency, given its importance to the moral and social well-being of the state.
Tinubu denies plan to legalise LGBT rights.
Recall that the federal government denied the report that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was planning to introduce LGBT rights into the country.
Clarifying the rumour clauses in the Samoa Agreement, the presidency said that Nigerian law superseded the agreement.
The government assured that President Tinubu would not sign any agreement that would contradict the interests of Nigerians.

“Gay wedding”: Police arrest over 100 suspects
In a previous story, Legit.ng reported that the Delta police command announced the arrest of over 100 gay suspects in the south-south state.
The suspects allegedly organised a gay wedding ceremony in a hotel, contrary to the set rules in Nigeria.
Police operatives subsequently paraded the male suspects, with some of them appearing like crossdressers.
