Speaking to BBC Pidgin on Wednesday, a ministry official stated unequivocally that there were no restrictions targeting Nigerian travellers.
The statement came in response to viral reports alleging that Qatari authorities had introduced a travel ban preventing male applicants from entering the country unless accompanied by their families.
The reports further claimed that only women or family groups were eligible to apply for visas, and that applicants were required to present proof of a five-star hotel booking and a return flight ticket before being considered for a travel or transit visa.
These alleged measures were said to be in response to frequent cases of overstays by Nigerian visitors.
Hayya platform confirms visa process remains unchanged
Contrary to the social media speculation, Qatar’s digital visa platform, Hayya, confirmed that the visa application procedures remain unchanged. In a statement shared with the BBC, the platform said:
“There has been no suspension or changes to the current procedures. If any updates are to be made, they will be announced on our official platforms.”
This clarification has helped to dispel confusion and concern among prospective Nigerian travellers, many of whom had expressed frustration over the alleged restrictions.
Nigerian visits to Qatar on the rise
Qatar has witnessed a notable increase in visits from Nigerian nationals in recent years.
Analysts have partly attributed this trend to the diplomatic tensions between Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates from 2021 to 2024, which resulted in visa restrictions and the suspension of flights between the two countries.
As a result, many Nigerian travellers turned to alternative destinations, with Qatar emerging as a popular choice.
The Qatari government’s latest statement is expected to reassure Nigerian tourists and business travellers planning trips to the Gulf nation.
