Corps Member Found Lifeless in Lodge as Police Begin Investigation

The Bauchi state Police Command has commenced an investigation into the death of a serving member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Dambam Local Government Area.
The deceased, identified as 28-year-old Nwokedi Chukwuebuka, was found lifeless in his accommodation early on Sunday, reported the Punch.

The apartment had been provided for corps members in the area by their colleagues and the Corps Liaison Officer (CLO).
Police confirms start of investigation
Police Public Relations Officer, Ahmed Waziri, confirmed the development on Monday. He said the state Commissioner of Police, Sani Aliu, had directed a preliminary investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
According to Waziri:
“The command received a complaint of sudden and natural death on August 10, 2025, at about 9:20 am. The Dambam LGA Corps Liaison Officer came to the Dambam Divisional Police Headquarters and reported that on the same date at about 8:30 am, all corps members who were Christians serving in the LGA were preparing for Sunday church services when they noticed that Nwokedi Chukwuebuka, with state code number BA/25A/2069, did not wake up.”
He explained that the CLO went to check on him and discovered that he was not breathing. The matter was immediately reported to the police, and the Divisional Police Officer was instructed to visit the scene.

Waziri added:
“The corps member was taken to the hospital, where a medical doctor certified him dead, as enshrined in international best practices. The body was later deposited at the Federal Medical Centre, Azare, mortuary.”
The police spokesperson said the investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of death.
News of Chukwuebuka’s passing has left fellow corps members and residents of the community in shock. The NYSC has not yet issued an official statement on the matter
NYSC denies punishing corps member
In another news, the National Youth Service Corps has rejected claims that it withheld the Certificate of National Service from a corps member in Lagos State for criticising President Bola Tinubu.
The corps member, identified as Ushie Rita Uguamaye, gone viral earlier this year on social media after posting a video where she expressed frustration over rising prices in the country and labelled the president a “terrible leader.”
Days later, she released another video in tears, alleging that NYSC officials had telephoned her with threats following her remarks.
Her statements drew public attention and sparked online debates, with some accusing the NYSC of punishing her for exercising her freedom of expression.

In a statement issued on Saturday by its management, the NYSC described the allegation as “entirely unfounded and false in its entirety.”
The scheme clarified that Ms. Uguamaye was among 131 corps members whose Certificates of National Service were withheld for what it termed “valid disciplinary reasons.”
