Warri, Delta state - The inaugural edition of the Governor Sheriff Oborevwori U-17 Unity Cup is scheduled to kick off on Sunday, August 3, 2025, in Warri, Delta state.
A statement released on Sunday, July 27, indicates that eight local government areas (LGAs) from the Delta Central senatorial district will participate in the football competition.

The grassroots tournament, backed by businessman and football promoter Chief Amurun Idama, aims to strengthen regional unity and identify young football talents for local and international development.
How Gov Oborevwori U-17 Unity Cup will be played
All eight LGAs in Delta Central will compete in a round-robin format. The opening match will feature Ethiope East versus Ughelli North at the Ekpan Police Station Football Field, kicking off at 3:00 PM on Sunday, August 3.
Matches will be held every weekend at different venues across the senatorial zone.
At the official draws and inauguration ceremony held on July 13 in Warri, Chief Idama inaugurated a 31-member Local Organizing Committee (LOC) to coordinate tournament logistics. Former Nigeria international Edema Fuludu (MON) will chair the LOC, with Victor Odairi serving as Vice Chairman and Technical Head, and Peter Ospiro as Secretary.
In a move to boost morale, Chief Idama presented full kits to all LOC members, including jerseys, face caps, and shoes. Participating teams also received complete kits. Appearance fees, bonuses, and individual awards have been introduced to further motivate players and officials.

Cash prizes and awards announced
Each LGA will receive N1 million as an appearance fee. Additional prizes will be awarded to semi-finalists and finalists:
- Champions: N5 million, gold trophy, and gold medals
- Runners-up: N3 million, silver trophy, and silver medals
- Third Place: N2 million and bronze medals
- Fourth Place: N1 million
Other available incentives include new kits and football boots for finalists and semi-finalists, as well as recognition awards for individual excellence, such as Best Player, Best Goalkeeper, Highest Goal Scorer, Most Valuable Team, and Best Coach.

Reason for Gov Oborevwori U-17 Unity Cup disclosed
Speaking at the launch, Chief Idama highlighted the broader purpose of the Unity Cup.
He said:
“This tournament is about more than football. It’s about uniting the youth of Delta Central and giving them a platform to shine."
Tinubu speaks as Super Falcons win WAFCON
In another report, President Bola Tinubu congratulated Nigeria's Super Falcons on winning the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) for the 10th time in the history of the championship.
The president sent his congratulatory message in a statement signed by his special adviser on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga, shortly after the team secured its victory in the competition final on Saturday night, July 26.
Tinubu described the team's victory as a true reflection of the Nigerian spirit. The Super Falcons had secured the victory from being 2-0 down at halftime, to scoring three goals in the second half, the Super Falcons did the impossible, beating the host nation to win the WAFCON 2024 tournament.
