BREAKING: Sanwo-Olu Cancels Lagos Peace Walk, Gives Crucial Reason

Lagos, Nigeria - Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the governor of Lagos, has "stood down" preparations for the Lagos Walk for Peace initially scheduled to hold in December 2021.

The Lagos governor had in an address in November 30 announced the peace walk and invited some notable participants in the October 2020 EndSARS protest as he sought to "heal" Lagos.

However, in a press statement on the state government's official website sighted by Legit.ng on Thursday, December 9, Governor Sanwo-Olu said he is “constrained to stand down all preparations for the Walk for Peace” so as not to “endanger the life of any Lagosian” amid the outbreak of the Omicron COVID-19 variant.

He said:

“Between Tuesday 30, November 2021 that I made my address and now, we have seen a significant rise in cases associated with the Omicron variant of this pandemic.
“Given this development, I am constrained to stand down all preparations for the Walk for Peace. I will not endanger the life of any Lagosian in my sincere search for peace. I am overwhelmed by the outpouring of support the initiative received from far and near. The deluge of support is, however, indicative of one thing: our people know the strategic place of peace to our quest for development.”

EndSARS: LASU students vow to join Sanwo-Olu’s proposed peace walk

Meanwhile, before the cancellation, students of the Lagos State University (LASU) had said they would embark on the peace walk by Governor Sanwo-Olu.

Comrade Oladipupo Uthman Badmus, president of the LASU student union government, said this when the governor visited the school on Thursday, December 2.

Sanwo-Olu who inaugurated a new students’ arcade at the school was welcomed by the SUG President, Speaker of the Students Union Representatives, Rt. Hon. Mustapha Adejuwon, and hundreds of students.
