Nollywood Thrown Into Mourning As Veteran Actor Segun Remi ‘Chief Kanran’ Passes Away

The Nigerian movie industry has been thrown into mourning as it lost a veteran actor Segun Remi, better known as Chief Kanran.
According to filmmaker and celebrity journalist Seun Oloketuyi, the veteran actor died on Friday morning, August 15, 2025.

Oloketuyi, who shared a picture of Chief Kanran, known for his unique style, humour, in numerous stage plays and movies over several decades, wrote in a caption,
"Popular Actor Segun Remi popularly known as Chief kanran died Friday morning. Details soon."
At the time of reporting, the cause of his death is unknown.
What to know about Chief Kanran
He played the role of Kurunmi in a play of the same title written by Prof. Ola Rotimi. The veteran was a cast on the episodes of ‘Mirror In the Sun,' which marked the beginning of his transition from stage to the screen.
He acted as Alaafin Kanran in a drama shown on Lagos Television, October 1, 1988.

Some of the movies late Chief Kanran has featured in include, Vigilante, Ose- Sango, Eri Okan, Itunnu, Eewo, Idunnu, Orire, Ofa Oro, Ajaka Oko, Great Bird of Eternity, Sharttered Bridge. Oba Oluaiye, Bibi Ire, Ilu le, I50 Million.

Chief Kanran revealed that he stopped acting and started working independently when people stopped casting him for roles out of jealousy.

He added that shortly after, his four cars packed up one after the other until he started walking with his legs. Kanran's movie and filming equipment worth over N500m also got burnt.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng recalls reporting that a US based woman reacted to Chief Kanran's interview with Pastor Gabriel on Instagram.
Following the interview, a Nigerian woman based in America, Auto Bola came online to call out the actor.
