As the cost of digital entertainment continues to rise, more Nigerians are discovering that they do not have to pay monthly subscription fees to enjoy quality movies, live sports, children's programmes and television shows.
The country's growing internet access has made streaming more accessible, and a wave of free, ad-supported platforms is giving viewers plenty of entertainment options without breaking the bank.

The latest additions, MTN One TV and AFree TV, have expanded the list of free streaming services available in Nigeria to 13, offering everything from African movies and international TV channels to sports, documentaries and educational content.
MTN One TV expands streaming options
MTN Group officially launched MTN One TV in June 2026 as part of its Ambition 2030 strategy to transform digital entertainment across Africa.
The platform combines free ad-supported streaming with premium subscription options and pay-as-you-watch content, allowing users to choose how they consume entertainment.
According to MTN, viewers can access local productions, international programmes, live television channels and children's content, while payments for premium content can be made using airtime, Mobile Money and other locally supported payment options where available.
The telecom giant says the platform is designed to lower barriers to streaming while giving customers greater flexibility.
AFree TV brings African stories to global audiences
Another major entrant is AFree TV, which became available in Nigeria in May 2026 through Sentech's Freevision Play platform.
The service operates on the increasingly popular Free Ad-Supported Television (FAST) model, allowing viewers to watch content at no cost in exchange for periodic advertisements.
Its lineup includes three live channels, namely LN247, SportsCast Africa and Homebase, alongside a Catch-up feature that allows viewers to replay recently aired programmes they may have missed.
AFree TV says its mission is to unite African broadcasters and content creators while showcasing the continent's stories to audiences around the world.
More free entertainment for Nigerians
Another platform gaining traction is cAfrica.TV, which has grown rapidly since its launch in 2024.
The streaming service reported more than 612,000 subscribers by the end of 2025 and offers a wide range of African and international entertainment, including live TV, radio, movies, documentaries, podcasts and on-demand programming.
Meanwhile, several other platforms continue to provide free streaming options for Nigerian audiences.
DStv Stream offers selected free channels, including Channel O, SuperSport Schools, SuperSport Play and TBN Africa, although its free channel lineup has reduced significantly over the years.
eVOD provides viewers with free soap operas, dubbed telenovelas, original productions and classic Hollywood movies.
Sports lovers can also enjoy live and on-demand rugby matches through RugbyPass TV, while Twitch remains a favourite destination for gaming streams, esports competitions and live creators.
For many Nigerians, however, YouTube remains the most popular free streaming platform, offering billions of videos covering entertainment, education, music, news, comedy, lifestyle, business and virtually every other interest.

With subscription costs becoming a growing concern for many households, free streaming services are emerging as an attractive alternative for Nigerians looking to stay entertained.
Whether viewers want blockbuster movies, African dramas, live sports, children's cartoons, documentaries or educational content, the expanding range of free platforms means quality entertainment is now only an internet connection away.
CANAL+ slashes DStv, GOtv decoder prices
Legit.ng earlier reported that CANAL+ Group, the new owner of MultiChoice, has reduced decoder prices for new DStv and GOtv subscribers by up to 40% as part of a broader strategy to revive Africa’s biggest pay-TV operator and attract more customers.
The move comes as MultiChoice returns to profitability following years of subscriber losses, weak consumer spending and growing competition from global streaming platforms.
CANAL+, the French media and entertainment group that completed its takeover of MultiChoice in September 2025, said early signs indicate that its turnaround plan is gaining momentum.
