2015: Goodluck Jonathan Picks Sambo As His Running Mate

President Goodluck Jonathan announced Vice President Namadi Sambo as his running mate in the 2015 elections.

He made this known early morning of December 11, after having been ratified as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate for the February polls, Premium Times reports.

Jonathan, who according to The Nation received 2,812 ‘Yes’ votes out of the 2,812 votes, mounted the podium at 12.45 a.m to thank his party colleagues for the endorsement.

"I stand before you to accept your nomination as your Presidential flag-bearer. I will give my all. I will not let you down. I will not fail the PDP and above all, I will not fail Nigeria."

The country leader continued:

"I want to announce that the Vice President, Namadi Sambo, a loyal and tested partner will be my running mate and Vice Presidential Candidate once again."

President Jonathan vowed to continue fighting against corruption and insurgency in the country.

"Inspite of our challenges, our unity remain solid. What we need today is to consolidate on our gains to secure our future. Only by united efforts can we defeat terror.

"This government will continue to do whatever is desired to improve security. Our fight against corruption is on course and we will do more in the coming years."

Before the announcement was made, there had been speculations that  Jonathan might opt for someone different from Mr. Sambo, who was first named Vice President in 2010. However the choice was made in favour of Sambo.

It would be recalled that in September the PDP adopted GEJ as party's sole candidate for the 2015 presidential elections. The unprecedented decision triggered hot discussions, with many opposing the move, which left no chance for other party members.

Meanwhile the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primaries, which started yesterday, are in progress. Follow Legit.ng for the live updates.
