Israel and the Palestinian militant group known as Hamas on Thursday, May 20, resolved to accept a ceasefire deal after days of attacks and counter-attacks resulting in many deaths and large-scale destruction of properties on both sides.
According to a Hamas leader who spoke with CNN on Thursday, May 20, the terms of the latest agreement were brokered by the Egyptian government.

The Hamas members added that the truce will take effect from the early hours of Friday, May 21, Reuters also reported.
Confirming this, the prime minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, revealed that during a security cabinet meeting in the evening of Thursday, the Chief of Staff, the heads of the Shin Bet, the Mossad, and the National Security Council accepted to take Egypt's suggestion.
The Israeli leader said the Egyptian initiative is a call for a mutual unconditional ceasefire.
His words:
"The Security Cabinet convened this evening. And accepted unanimously the recommendation of all security elements -- the Chief of Staff, the head of the Shin Bet, the Head of the Mossad, and the head of the National Security Council -- to accept the Egyptian initiative for a mutual unconditional ceasefire that will go into effect at an hour to be agreed upon later."
Meanwhile, Nigeria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday, May 13, said the country was observing the conflict between Israeli and Palestine forces with “great concern.”
Legit.ng reported that the Nigerian government urged both parties to "see reason and deescalate the hostilities".

The statement posted on the ministry's official Twitter page read partly:
“The Nigerian government further urges the two parties to remain committed to the two-state solution and, in the meantime, guarantee the rights of all citizens to live in peace and dignity.”
