Garba Shehu, a presidential media aide, has made a distinction between the claims against Isa Pantami and Kemi Adeosun, a former minister of finance.

Shehu on Friday, April 23, explained that if Pantami had issues with certificate forgery, the same crime Adeosun was accused of, the presidency would have taken a different position on him.

The case of Adeosun came when President Buhari's aide was asked by Channels TV why the presidency was reportedly quick to let the former minister go but chose to defend Pantami.

He clarified that in the issue of the minister of communications and digital economy, it was a question of probing of his thoughts at the time he made the rather controversial comments with a view of trying to ascertain his intentions, The Cable reported.

Shehu stated:

“In the second case which is that of Pantami, you are probing the thoughts, what is called ‘McCarthyism’; you search the inner recesses of the minds of individuals, bring out things they have said, or they are about to say, or you think they would say, and use that against them,” he said.
“If Pantami had forged a certificate before coming into office, the attitude (of the presidency) would have been different."

Meanwhile, Dennis Amachree, a former assistant director with the Department of State Security, DSS, had revealed that the past extremists' views of Pantami must have been known to the secret police.

“He (Pantami) has just submitted his name into US database. Now, people are talking about him and that has come to the attention of the United States Embassy in Nigeria already."
