Budget padding allegations
Like most politicians, Yakubu has also been implicated in some corruption deals. One of the most talked-about was the budget padding allegations in 2016.
Former chairman of House Committee on Appropriation Adbdulmumin Jibrin alleged that Hon Yakubu Dogara had colluded with his deputy, Yusuf Lasun, Chief Whip Alhassan Doguwa, and Minority Whip Leo Ogor to earmark up to ₦40 billion to themselves in the National Assembly budget.
The allegations also included a step-by-step guide of how the former speaker allegedly hijacked the budget consideration process to introduce frivolous line items as a way of forcing through his selfish interest.
Mr Jibrin further said he wrote the statement to clarify that his allegations were against Mr Dogara and the others. But he ended up giving new insights into what he said were Mr Dogara’s pervasive corruption.
Yusuf Lasun and Alhassan Doguwa denied the allegations, terming it Jibrin's way of expressing his anger after being sacked as chairman of Committee on Appropriation. Mr Yakubu didn't offer any official statement but instead left the House to deal with the attacks.
Representative Abdulmumin Jibrin was later suspended for 180 legislative days following a probe into his allegation. The House described his allegation as "sundry act of misconduct" against the members and institution of the House of Representatives.
