- Ebonyi state governor is the latest politician to jump on the defection train and is now officially the newest high-level member of the APC
- Dave Umahi who used to be a member of the PDP moved to the ruling party after weeks of speculation that he planned to defect
- Earlier, the governor confirmed his move to the APC saying he left because of the injustice suffered by the southeast region in the hands of PDP
The governor of Ebonyi state, Dave Umahi, on Thursday, November 19, officially defected from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to Channels TV, Umahi was welcomed officially to the ruling party at an event held in Ebonyi state with APC governors such as Mai Mala Buni, Muhammadu Badaru Abubakar, Abubakar Bagudu and Abubakar Bello in attendance.
Other dignitaries present include the senior special assistant to the president on domestic affairs, Mohammed Sarki Abba, former Senate president, Ken Nnamani, minister of justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami; and Sadiya Farouq, the minister of humanitarian affairs, disaster management, and social development.
Governor Umahi in his speech at the official defection said:
“Henceforth, Ebonyi is 100% APC. We are all moving to APC.”
He, however, appealed to both the APC and the PDP to work together in unity.
His deputy, Eric Igwe, who was also at the event announced that he will be joining his principal in the APC.
It would be recalled that Umahi's defection to the APC on Tuesday, November 17, was officially recognised by the ruling party household, which welcomed him into the fold, declaring that the state is now connected to the center.
Umahi, who is the chairman of the Southeast Governors' Forum (SGF), has since been attacked by top members of his former party including Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike who said he defected to pursue a presidential ambition.
But clearing the air on his defection, the governor rubbished the claim that the PDP made him what he is, saying he has contributed immensely to the opposition party including raising the idea of bringing Godwin Obaseki during his turbulent moments at APC.
The Ebonyi governor had earlier revealed why he dumped the opposition party. Umahi speaking on the issue of his defection said he moved to the APC because of injustice the southeast region suffered.
According to him, he has no regrets about moving to the APC.
