The actor began his career in 1973. He played the role of Rick Welsh, a University of Minnesota track star, in one of the episodes of The Mary Tyler Moore Show. In 1975, he starred as Bobby Joe in the film Sixpack Annie, and this marked his debut in the film sector.

His debut on TV shows started when he played the role of Luke Macahan in How the West Was Won between 1976 and 1979. He then played Billie Joe Robbins in the 1980 film The Baltimore Bullet.
