The Nigerian footballer was born on 28th October 1984 in Lagos, Nigeria. He was raised alongside his two brothers, Oladipupo, who was a footballer, and John Ronan.

Oladipupo, his elder brother, played for Reggiana (an Italian club), Partizan, (Serbian club), and Innsbrucker AC, an Austrian club.

Young Obafemi started his career in 1999 after becoming famous for his speed, strength, and skills while on the pitch.

The footballer was scouted by Churchill Oliseh and later joined F.C. Ebedei, a local football club. In 2001, he transferred to Inter Milan in Europe for a fee of 750,000 Euros.

He led the team in winning several tournaments, and in 2005, he signed a contract whereby he would receive an annual salary of 2.5 million Euros until 2010.

While still playing for Inter Milan, he made records for being the first teenager to score in three Champion League seasons consecutively.

His tenacity and speed earned him a playing spot in the Nigerian Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) squad in 2006.

Later, he joined Newcastle United in August 2006 on a five-year contract at a fee of 15 million Euros. He had the number 9 jersey.

He later moved to Bundesliga club VFL Wolfsburg in 2009 and in July 2010, he was sold for a reported €17 million to reigning Russian Premier League champions Rubin Kazan.

In January 2011, he joined Premier League club Birmingham City on loan until the end of the season. In September 2012, Martins moved to Levante on a free transfer, signing a two-year contract.

From 2013 to 2015, he played for Seattle Sounders FC of Major League Soccer, where he scored 40 goals in 72 games. On 18 February 2016, Martins was signed to Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua.
