Expect heavy floods from September 6, FG warns 9 states

- The Nigerian government has again warned that many states may be wrecked by flood very soon

About nine states across the nation have been alerted of an imminent flood that may wreak havoc by the federal government.

This was disclosed in an alert from the Niger Basin Authority to which Nigeria is a member.

According to the report, the floods would begin any time from September 6, starting with Kebbi state, The Nation reports.

Other states that might be severely hit include Niger, Kwara, Anambra, Delta, Edo, Rivers, Bayelsa, Nasarawa, and Kogi.

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) also said that if excess waters from the dams in other countries upstream rivers Niger and Benue are released the flooding might be worse.

However, the agency has asked states and relevant government agencies to clear blocked drainages and dredge river channels as a matter of urgency since Nigeria is located downstream.

HIHSA stated that poor drainage systems might cause flash and urban floods in major cities like Abuja, Lagos, Ibadan, Abeokuta, Ado-Ekiti, Osogbo, Asaba, Port Harcourt, Yenagoa, Benin City, Abakaliki, Awka, Nsukka, Birnin–Kebbi, Sokoto, Lokoja, Kaduna, Suleja, Gombe, Yola, Makurdi and Lafia.

Recall that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) had forecasted very cloudy and rainy climates throughout the nation from Wednesday, July 15, to Friday, July 17.

NiMet`s weather outlook released in Abuja said that the atmosphere was predominantly cloudy with influx of moisture-laden winds across the country.

The agency said that cloudy skies and the possibilities of thunderstorms are expected over the northern region, especially in Sokoto and Kebbi.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) warned about 102 local government areas in 28 states of an imminent flood.

NEMA's director-general, Muhammadu Muhammed, in a statement on Friday, July 10, made it known that from the yearly Seasonal Rainfall Prediction (SRP) and Annual Flood Outlook (AFO) released by the NIHSA, Kaduna will be one of the affected states.

Muhammed specifically stated that the Kaura and Zaria local government areas of the state will be hit by the flood.
