Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers has come under attack after saying Governor Godwin Obaseki, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the forthcoming guber election in Edo state, does not have a strong opponent.

The election in Edo is less than four months and politicians mainly from the two prominent political parties, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and PDP, have resulted in desperate attacks on personality.

Governor Wike, who is the chairman of PDP national campaign council of Edo state, had on Wednesday, July 29, boasted that Obaseki would win the election because his opponents do not have the political acceptability to challenge the governor.

Speaking on a live programme, the Rivers governor explained that the people of the south-south state already knew the type of candidate APC presented to them following what the former national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, said about Osagie Ize-Iyamu four years ago.

“I respect the Benin tradition and I know that Edo people are educated to know that Oshiomhole cannot play on their intelligence.

“If he is now retracting what he said of Ize Iyamu, who is sure that he’s saying the correct thing now," Wike said through his commissioner of information and communication Paulinus Nsirim.

But in a swift response, APC said the duo of Wike and Obaseki is planning to rig the forthcoming election through violence.

In a statement released in Benin by the chairman of Edo APC campaign council, John Mayaki, the ruling party said Wike and Obaseki are dishonest and violent. He added that both governors have undisputed antecedents of perfected intimidation tactics.

"There is a persistent problem in the violent, dishonest, and generally deplorable conduct of the rejected PDP, which evidently poses a great threat to the peaceful conduct of the September 19 election,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that the leadership of Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state has been lauded by Omo N’Oba Akpolokpolo Ewuare II, the Oba of Benin in Edo state.

The prominent monarch commended Wike after the governor and some bigwigs of the PDP paid him a courtesy visit in his palace to seek blessing for the reelection of Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Obaseki, who recently defected from APC after falling out with Adams Oshiomhole, former national chairman of the party, is seeking reelection on the platform of the opposition party.
