Edo election: APC acting chairman Giadom cancels party's screening, reverses Obaseki's disqualification

- The APC deputy national chairman, Victor Giadom, has declared himself the national chairman of the party

- Oshiomhole was on Tuesday, June 16, suspended by the Court of Appeal as the national chairman of the party

- Shortly after he assumed office on Wednesday, June 17, he canceled the party's governorship primary screening for Edo election

In what seems like the final battle and the survival of the fittest among the major contenders in the ruling party, the acting national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Victor Giadom, has canceled the screening for the Edo state governorship primary.

Channels TV reports that Giadom explained that he has taken over based on a previous court order empowering him to do so.

Legit.ng gathered that he has the backing of the members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) in his new decision.

This comes after the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja on Tuesday, June 16, affirmed the suspension of Adams Oshiomole as a member and national chairman of the APC.

Following Oshiomhole's suspension, the party on Tuesday, June 16, elevated Abiola Ajimobi to serve as its acting national chairman.

Ajimobi is the party’s deputy national chairman for the southern region and is a former governor of Oyo state.

In a statement signed by party spokesman, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, on Tuesday, the APC said its National Working Committee (NWC) had been guided by the party’s legal department in line with the provisions of its constitution.

“According to section 14.2. (iii), of the APC constitution, the deputy national chairman, north/south ‘Shall act as the national chairman in the absence of the national chairman from his zone,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that Giadom declared himself on Wednesday, June 17, the new acting national chairman.

It was gathered that his claim came a few hours after the NWC ordered Ajimobi to take over leadership of the party following affirmation of the suspension of Oshiomhole by the court.

He said he assumed office based on a March 16, 2020 Abuja high court order in suit no FCT/HC/M/6447/2020, which empowers him to act as the national chairman of the party.
